How it Works
The accelerometer inside iPod touch uses three elements: a silicon mass, a set of silicon springs, and an electrical current. The silicon springs measure the position of the silicon mass using the electrical current. Rotating iPod touch causes a fluctuation in the electrical current passing through the silicon springs. The accelerometer registers these fluctuations and tells iPod touch to adjust the display accordingly.

The 2G iPod Touch is a solid update, with some nice new, er, touches. If you have the existing 1G Touch, you won't find a compelling reason to upgrade unless you use the Nike+ fitness device, as this new Touch has that support built in. If you've been waiting for the price to come down, good news: the new devices are about $100 cheaper than their predecessors, so the 32Gb Touch can be had for under $400, and the 8Gb for a little over $200. The 16Gb device strikes me as the sweet spot at $299.
Improvements include: iPhone Firmware 2.1, which opens access to the AppStore and fixes some of 2.0's bugs; an internal speaker (not terribly loud, but it'll do in a pinch); the Nike+ support; a new form factor that is lighter and curved for easier holding (though if you use it on a flat surface it's not as stable as the 1G); 6 hour video / 36 hour audio battery life; support for the new iTunes 8.0 Genius playlists (similar to Rhapsody Channels and Pandora, but limited to your on-device music collection).
If your primary need is for an audio player, especially for podcasts and audiobooks where the device sits in your pocket for hours on end, I'd recommend you consider the iPod Nano. The new 4G Nano tops off at 16Gb, which works out to nearly six months of spoken-word content. And at $199, you get twice the storage for less than the 8Gb Touch.
Where the Touch shines is in its interactivity - a gorgeous video-viewing experience that won't strain your eyes like the Nano, full Safari browser and other Internet-enabled applications (with a WiFi connection), gorgeous 2D and decent 3D gaming, PDA-like functionality. It's called Touch for a reason - it screams out to be looked at, touched, played with, caressed, even licked. It's a full-blown computer in your hand; to use it as a mere digital audio player makes Steve Jobs cry.
I wouldn't toss a 1G Touch for this device, since you can upgrade to the 2.1 firmware and get most of the goodies in software. But if you're looking to upgrade from a smaller device and want something with the additional potential to replace your Palm, PSP or Nintendo DS Lite, this is a compelling option.

I have anxiously been awaiting the arrival of the second generation iPod Touch. I just had to get one at the local Apple store, and I am incredibly impressed!
First, the Touch has added features that were missing and desired: A speaker, now included. It won't rock the house down, but for a quick listen to a song, or more importantly to have audio, when playing games, the speaker is great and was needed.
Next, it has physical volume buttons on the side of the device, like the iPhone. This is great because it makes it easy to reach into your pocket and change the volume.
The appearance of the iPod Touch also improved. On the edges, the device is even thinner than the first generation device, and it just feels more expertly crafted this time around. I also prefer the feel and texture to the iPhone because the iPhone has too much plastic, but the iPod Touch has a stunningly gorgeous stainless steel back. I would recommend some plastic sticky protectors to protect the stainless because because the metal will get scratches otherwise.
I hate to sound overly excited about it, but when you use it, it is pretty cool.
The software is great and comes with the latest version, so you get all the fantastic applications: Mail, Safari, Maps, Calendars, etc.
APP STORE - I can't tell you how excited I am to have games and other applications in my pocket as well. You have direct access to the App Store on the iPod over Wi-Fi and on your computer via iTunes, where you can purchase nifty applications including games. I started playing the iPhone/iPod Touch version of Spore today, and it's a lot of fun. I'm sure even more fantastic games will be coming in the months ahead, and there are already dozens to buy.
Battery - The battery life is improved, and you will get up to 36 hours of audio and 6 hours of video. Apple gives relatively fair estimates, so I think we can expect that particularly the audio number, if you didn't keep lighting the screen up.
Nike + built in. For those who love working out, the Nike + receiver is now built into the iPod Touch, so just add the sensor into a supported Nike shoe, and you'll have your data right on the iPod Touch. It is really nice, to not have to connect a dongle, to the bottom of the device.
The new Genius feature is great too. Select a song, and then use the genius feature. It will create a playlist of songs from your library that are similar to said selected song. You're ready to listen to songs, which fit your current mood. Really impressive how accurately it can do this.
Capacity - You'll have to decide on the right capacity for you: 8, 16, or 32 GB. If you're mainly into music, 8GB isn't so bad. If you want a couple videos now and again, you might want the 16. Obviously, if you want to fit all you can on it, get the 32. All are an appropriate value. Don't forget that you will also likely buy some applications for the iPod, which will also take up a bit of space. Get the right one for you at the price you like.
Overall, I was bit skeptical of the iPod Touch, but with this new generation I'm sold, and I love it. Those with a first generation will get some of the new features such as Genius via update, so it's mainly the speaker you'd be missing out on and slightly different look. I'm not sure that is worth the upgrade, but it might be for some. If you're getting your second iPod, it's good, if you want your first iPod, it's probably the best one ever. Also, for those who don't want to trade their phone for the iPhone, this gives you so many of the iPhone features in an iPod! Perfect. I'd highly recommend the iPod Touch. I'm off to play Spore on mine some more.
